317 Pyrodiversity and the link between birds, wildfire, and healthy forests
What can observing birds show us about the health of our forests? We will start this trip from a bird's eye view, making observations on surrounding forest conditions from the Minaret Vista. We will visit the Inyo Craters and keep our eyes out for Black-backed Woodpeckers, discuss how fire suppression has altered forested ecosystems, and learn about how beneficial fire supports habitat for birds like the Northern Goshawk. Along the way, we’ll touch on efforts underway in the Eastern Sierra to return beneficial fire to the landscape. (est. driving miles: 70; moderate hiking)
